Mismatch Boxwoods? Insider Tips

Boxwoods accent well to most any gardens and landscapes having a formal appeal. They really can be shaped into almost any design your heart can think of. Boxes come in many different colors of green-so definitely look at what you have and what the nursery has and make some choices based on what will look good together. 3. Your spring clean-up and maintenance of boxwood's starts with the addition of a 1/2 cup (per plant) of good organic, acidic fertilizer that has compost, peat, some special evergreen nutirents and dehydrated manure, mixed and spread out, around the base of your bushes. Ignoring the needs of the root systems leads to issues, so each season check them and add the needed compost to help protect, replenish and ensure their safety.

4. Note that boxwood trimming can be fairly simple and there are some things you'll want to know too. Always be sure to let new spring growth harden off before you have your boxes first hair cut of the year and never prune them late in the fall. Simply put, in don't want to have all dead and brown patches in the spring, just don't do your pruning in the fall. Those big brown sections in your boxwoods is a no-no considering boxwoods are a winter green. It is always better if they are slightly bushy looking than dead looking.

5. A shallow root system on boxwoods usually leads to your green beauties dying out rather fast. So don't forget to do the mulching on your boxwoods. This is going to help the boxes roots to retain the water they do get and protect them. On the other hand, you could wind up destroying your box's by rotting out the bark if you over do it with the mulch. All things in moderation is always a good rule to live by in the garden.

6.Periodically do a check of your boxes for fungal type diseases. While they are generally vigorous they can fall victim to few problems. The problem with your boxwoods may be disease issues and not simply damage from winter so you'll want to do some researching. A high percentage of the tree sicknesses and diseases can be fixed with a spray. It would be best to know exactly what chemicals you need prior to using them by completly investigating your problemed areas. When all else seems hopeless, simply replace the shrub that is having problems immediately. Fortuantly having to replace just one plant isn't a huge deal, but when it comes to big problems and replacing a entire hedge your in for some bucks.
